Dražovce Church of St Michael: a hilltop Romanesque landmark near Nitra
The Church of St Michael the Archangel (Dražovský kostolík) stands on a rocky hill above Dražovce, now part of Nitra in western Slovakia. A small Romanesque church with thick walls and a rounded apse, it counts among the oldest churches in the country and dominates the landscape from the edge of the Tribeč hills. It is a rewarding stop for anyone looking for hidden gems in Slovakia.
A tiny hilltop church from the 11th or 12th century opens its doors for just one Mass a year, yet it was once chosen to appear on a banknote as a symbol of the beginnings of Christianity in Slovakia.
The history of the Church of St Michael at Dražovce
The rocky hill above Dražovce, at the south-western end of the Tribeč mountains, was settled long before the church existed. Slavs raised a fortified hillfort here, and traces of the defensive settlement have been found around the church. According to the German Wikipedia, a first stone church with a single nave and a horseshoe-shaped apse was built within the old hillfort by the middle of the 11th century. It was later destroyed, but its foundations and the lowest part of its walls survive.
The present church was built on the same foundations, in the 12th century or around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. Its walls are mainly stone with a smaller share of brick, and it has the semicircular apse that can still be seen today. A church here is mentioned in the second Zobor deed of 1113. In the first half of the 13th century the building was renewed and received a gallery and a tower. An annex dates from the same period, possibly a hermitage, at a time when the church was linked to the administration of the monastery on Zobor hill; it was pulled down in the 15th century.
In the late 18th century further repairs were made, and the interior, including the altar, was largely renewed. When a new church was built in the middle of the village of Dražovce in 1803, the hilltop church lost its main role. Unlike other Romanesque churches in the area, however, it was not taken down for building stone, and it even survived quarrying below the hill during the building of a nearby railway line. Graves from the 11th to the 17th century were found around the church.
In modern times the church has been studied and cared for. Archaeological work in the 1940s and again between 1989 and 1997 was followed by a monument restoration, completed between 1993 and 1999. The church is not used regularly: a Mass is celebrated once a year on 29 September, the feast of St Michael, and weddings are also held here.
